Overview

2009  At our launch, we set out the basis of our campaign for new ways to engage witnesses following the decision of the Met police to do away with Witness Appeal Boards as new central targets stressed that the police should raise public confidence that they are tackling crime.  We look at the British Crime Survey figures on the latest rise of Street Crime - emergency call for witnesses and explain the official figures which show that over 80% of such attacks went unreported and unresolved in 2008/9.  Linked to this, we demonstrate why informal networks – rather than the media – are the main source of public awareness  and anxiety about such attacks: see Violent crime, public confidence & the media.
