Who
You’ll be surprised at how much you can do on your own. But the fact is you’ll do more, more quickly if you link up with other people. These can be friends, family, neighbours, victims of crime, witnesses, existing groups, anyone. Remember that there are plenty of experienced retired people looking for things to do and plenty of talented young people who want to put the skills they have learned to use. If you’ve got a twinkle in your eye, many people and many organisations will be happy to help when they hear what you’re trying to do.
Whether you’re going to make a move on your own or in an existing group or setting one up, let us know by emailing movement@witnessconfident.org and if you request we will put your contact details on the Where pages of this section, so that others can contact you.
You’ll see from the Get involved section and the Actions pages in this section, that there are lots of things that you can do – some incredibly easy and others more challenging. In many parts of the country the local council and local police will have a community safety or a crime prevention team or there may be a community crime fighter (www.communitycrimefighters.org.uk). If so, it’ll be well worth liaising with them and seeing what action plans they have to make things better. It may be they will be happy to help – or even fund –some of your activities.
Where the council and police bodies are helping or making real progress themselves, great – there’s every reason to work with them. Where it's difficult to find out what they are doing to tackle crime n your area - say their website does not have a plan for their current work or a report on their last year - email or write to them and suggest they put their work plan and strategy papers and a report on last year’s activities and expenditure on their website but meanwhile, ask them to send you a copy of them. It will be sensible to mention the Freedom of Information Act - and for help on that, see www.cfoi.org.uk. Whe you know what they're up to, seek a meeeting and check out our Get Involved/Influence and Lobby pages.
At this time, please do not use our name for your group or present yourselves as a local branch of Witness Confident without our written agreement. As a small start-up charity, we simply do not have the resources or ability to run a network of local groups at this time. If you think there are benefits in us creating and running a formal network, please let us know by emailing us at movement@witnessconfident.org and if there's a demand that we think we can meet it, we'll do our best. Meanwhile please feel free to use the material and ideas on this site. In exchange, we would be grateful if you could let us know how the material and ideas are working in practice and how they can be improved.
